Each of These Windows Has a Story to Tell . . .

120 vivid, color photographs of select stained glass windows from more than 75 Missouri churches from throughout the state. 6 x 9 inches. 144 pages.

By Ken Luebbering & Robyn Burnett. ISBN: 1-891708-05-8. $18.95.

The stories of stained glass windows are the stories of heroes and villains, of saints and sinners, of murderers and martyrs. Some of these stories are from lands and times far from our own. They take place in ancient Rome, in Constantinople, in France and in England. They also take place in St. Louis and Kansas City, in St. Joseph and New Madrid. Sometimes they are entirely factual, sometimes they reveal truth in other ways, but they always tell us something about ourselves, about who we are and how we got that way. Together they make up the history of Missouri stained glass windows, but they also tell us the histories of the Christian faith, of immigrants in a new land, of artists struggling to create beauty and reveal truth.

Reviews of Gospels in Glass:

Before the printing press, stained glass windows played a major role in communicating the Gospels to the masses. Today, they represent one of the last of many centuries-old crafts, and like any vanishing art form, need to be documented, preserved and exposed as an important part of our culture and faith story... David Lewis, Organist/Choirmaster, Francis Street Methodist Church, St. Joseph

In Gospels in Glass Robyn Burnett and Ken Luebbering show us through church stained glass windows that Missouri’s rich religious heritage is as beautiful as it is spiritually vibrant. A holy host of Christian denominations from every part of the state—big city Baptist to rural Catholic village—are represented in gorgeous photographs illuminated by a text that greatly enriches our understanding of their meaning... Kenneth H. Winn, State Archivist of Missouri and author of Exiles in a Land of Liberty: Mormons in America, 1830-1846

Robyn Burnett and Ken Luebbering’s well-researched resource on stained glass art helps fill a void in the written record of Missouri. The history of these treasures in glass has too long been forgotten entirely or else hidden away in dusty files. I am thrilled to have this information so readily accessible... Leslie Simpson, Director, Post Memorial Art Reference Library, Joplin and author of From Lincoln Logs to Lego Blocks: How Joplin was Built
